A Word Of Encouragement

It is sometimes difficult to remember what we once knew. Knowledge and skills erode with idleness or neglect; retention requires utilization and practice. Dependance on calculators allowed us to forget basic arithmetic. Personal computers led us into enormous capability; but weakened our ability to reason, to anticipate problems, and to rationalize solutions. We can now do our job in less time, leaving abundant time for mind-numbing social media and internet surfing at the expense of our work ethic.

The above thoughts came to mind as a result of me wondering the value of a class on Proverbs, after all, are they not similar in nature to the familiar Chinese Proverbs; prolific, unconnected, repetitive, and confusing? But listen closely to the prelude to the proverbs in Chapter 2.

If you pursue wisdom and knowledge and understanding, God will bless you. Only then can you understand the scriptures. Only then can you rely on the Spirit to guide you into wisdom and understanding. Then comes Proverbs 3:6, “Do not be wise in your own eyes”. Paul quotes this in Romans 12:16, “Do not be wise in your own opinion” and reinforces the message in 2 Cor 1:12 with the warning to avoid fleshly wisdom instead of the grace of God.
