We live in a culture that celebrates winners. We elevate the exceptional. We say it is the achievers that are worth talking about. It’s the excellent and the good looking, brilliant people who take center stage with a white hot spot light. But, what about those of who don’t fit that description? The last place finishers, the suffering and struggling, the unemployed and unremarkable? The apostle Peter uses a word for people like this. He calls them “blessed.” Peter says when you look at things through the lens of eternity everything changes. The losers become the winners. The rejected become the elected. The powerless become powerful. By God’s great love and grace He has chosen us to become heirs to His kingdom. We know longer live our lives according to the rules or standards of this world because we belong to another kingdom entirely. We truly are out of this world.
